One witness said it sounded like someone was trying to escape from the burning garage, Channels said. A distraught young woman said it was her friend’s mother, trapped inside. “Once the fire was out, they found a dead body inside the garage,” said Lt. Tom Bryski of the county sheriff’s station in Santa Clarita. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. NEWHALL – Firefighters found the charred remains of someone who became trapped Wednesday in a burning garage at an apartment complex, authorities said. Firefighters arrived at the blaze in the 21200 block of Bottletree Lane about 6:30 p.m. and found the burning garage stuffed with boxes and other objects, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Brendon Peart said. Before firefighters arrived, neighbors tried frantically to put the blaze out with garden hoses and fire extinguishers. “It was way beyond” extinguishing with such implements, said neighbor Michael Channels of Newhall. He said the flames reached about 20 feet high.
